This tour has been a bi-annual event for BUSA for the past three decades. In 2001, the Americans came over to the UK to race BUSA in a variety of sailing disciplines. We have been invited to travel to the USA to race the Americans on their home water this summer. For BUSA to be victorious, as we were in 2001, we will need to take the very best student sailors in the UK. Bear in mind we are also looking for single handed sailors as there are single handed events.

Selection Procedure

Initially, all applicants are invited to submit a sailing CV, detailing achievements in the past three years to BUSA.

CVs must arrive by Friday 23rd May 2003. Late applications will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

The selectors will invite up to twenty sailors to the first two days of trials, which will be held on 25th and 26th June at Bewl Water, Kent. 420 dinghies will be sailed. The format for the weekend will be at the discretion of the selectors, but will focus on fleet racing. Everyone will helm and crew.

Assuming that these two days are not unduly interrupted by adverse weather conditions, the selectors will then narrow the field down to twelve sailors. On Friday 27th June, a day of selections in Sonars will take place in Cowes for the final twelve. In addition to this, a final weekend of selections in 420s may take place on 28th and 29th June.

A team of eight will be selected to represent BUSA for their tour to America.

Costs

A nominal charge to cover the cost of running the trials will be made to each person. It should be noted that there will be considerable costs to the sailors that are selected for the BUSA team. Sponsorship is currently being sought after. If anyone would like to help secure sponsorship money, or even become sponsorship officer for the Tour please contact Mark Lees (mark.lees@imperial.ac.uk).

Selectors

The names of the selection committee will be published on the BUSA website before 30th May 2003.

Damage deposits

?100 per person, which must be paid to BUSA before the first session. ?100 is the limit of liability for any one incident. If a deduction is made following an incident a further cheque to restore the deposit may be required before a person may continue.

Tour dates

The exact dates are yet to be confirmed, but it is anticipated that the tour will last for approximately four weeks. The first Scheduled event is 6th September, so departure date will be around 31st August.
