Isabel Fitzgerald & Kirstie Urwin (Slow Handicap), Hugh Ward & Calum Healey (Fast Handicap), Matthew Wallis & Jack Muldoon (Firefly) and Martin Evans (Laser) are crowned Champions 2014 in their respective fleets at the BUCS Fleet Championships 2014 at the Mount Batten Centre in Plymouth.

The sun shone all weekend on 174 sailors in 97 boats competing in 4 fleets at the BUCS Fleet Championships 2014. City University was represented for the first time, joining 16 other teams for a great weekend in a city renowned for its socials. Organised by British Universities’ Sailing Association (BUSA) at the Mount Batten Sailing Centre, in conjunction with a partnership of Plymouth University and its Sports Union, Plymouth Youth Sailing, Plymouth Marine Institute and the University’s Sailing Club, the event drew in an impressive 97 volunteers.

Some challenging conditions in the Cattewater on Saturday and “champagne” sailing in the Sound on Sunday made for an excellent and testing Championships.

The BUCS Fleet Championships are about both individual and team champions. The important university overall placings both determine the Team Champions and earn vital BUCS points for many of the University Sailing Clubs. BUCS having introduced new female-only and male-only team competitions this year, these are scored on the basis of the top three boats for each university in either all-male teams or all-female teams.
