Welcome to the BUSA Website, the home of Higher Education sailing in the UK.
I’m Karen Thomas and I would love to welcome you to our website and wider association today. I am privileged to be the current chair of the British Universities Sailing Association and along with my committee, my job is to work with student sailors across the UK to make your university sailing experience the best it can be.
Whether you have never sailed before and fancy something new or you are an international racer, there is something for everyone. BUSA is the governing body for sailing within Higher Education establishments across the UK. It is affiliated to and supported by the RYA, with whom we work closely to develop, inspire and support the next generation of world-class sailors, while offering the opportunity for new-comers to discover the joy of our sport. In addition BUSA events have British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) recognition, with BUCS points awarded at each of the national competitions.
We are most well known for delivering championships in our four major disciplines which are Team Racing, Fleet Racing, Yacht Racing and Match Racing. Almost all of our member clubs participate and compete in team racing, sailing fireflies which are a versatile and manoeuvrable two person dinghy. One of BUSAs recent initiatives has been to develop coached events for those new to team racing or from smaller clubs. This was a great success and these events now run annually in each of our regions. When not training for the major championships, different university clubs host their own events up and down the country almost every weekend of the year. Check out the calender tab to find out more!
The whole Committee is here to serve you, and any members with suggestions, new ideas or feedback are strongly encouraged to contact us directly through the website or by contacting our secretary, Hannah Peters.
Congratulations to all the 2018-19 champions and best of luck to everyone for the season to come, especially our teams representing us at competitions, both nationally and internationally.
Over the past year we have been through a time of change and improvement, guided by our growing membership. This is an exciting time to get involved at any level, both on and off the water, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon.
