BUSA Membership

BUSA offer University Sailing Club Membership plus Alumni Membership.

Most University Sailing Clubs (USCs) are Member Clubs of BUSA. Membership is a requirement to compete in BUCS & BUSA Championships and events.

Membership of BUSA automatically provides affiliation to the RYA, without the need for the USC to pay the rate for affiliation. Affiliation to the RYA is a requirement for all competition and events conducted under the Racing Rules of Sailing. Hosting Clubs will expect that competing USC teams are so affiliated.

The membership structure intends to support and encourage universities seeking to develop a sailing club and to provide opportunities, both recreational and sporting, for students to learn-to-sail and become involved; we are calling these "participation" clubs. BUSA recognise that for some small clubs, which are seeking to grow to compete with other universities, there is a "development" or transitional phase before they are sufficiently well-established to compete in BUCS Championships and other BUSA events on an on-going basis. The majority of member clubs will continue to be in the full ‘Competitive’ category.

BUSA Membership consists of four categories, depending upon the involvement of the club in sailing activity. These are:

  • Competitive: For clubs that compete regularly in BUCS Championships, host their own event (or a BUCS event). A majority of BUSA members will be within this category.
  • Development: For clubs that compete on the University circuit and some BUCS events. This category has been created to help smaller clubs develop and grow.
  • Participation: For new clubs and clubs that do not yet compete on the university circuit. Clubs can only remain in this category for a maximum of 3 years. Clubs are usually small and comprise of up to 5 sailors or less.
  • Individual: For individual university students who do not have a sailing club at their university and wish to compete as an individual at BUSA Fleet nationals.
  • Alumni: Join BUSA as an Alumni to keep up to date with our latest news and be involved in developing University Sailing of the future. See the Alumni Membership page for details

Costs:

  • Competitive £230 per annum, payable by 1st November.
  • Development: £120 per annum, payable by 1st November.
  • Participation: £70 per annum, payable by 1st November.
  • Individual: £20 per annum, payable by 1st November.
  • Alumni: £10 per annum

Each September BUSA will circulate a membership survey to Commodores and Treasurers. Clubs must complete this within the required deadline. Failure to do so will automatically place the club in the Competitive Category.

Can a club change category during the year? If a Participation or Development Club wishes to move up a level (or 2), then it can do so upon request to the BUSA Treasurer, who will invoice the club for the new fee. For example, if a Development Club wishes to enter more than 1 team to the BUCS Team Racing Qualifiers, then they will be invoiced an additional £110 membership fee. A Club may not opt to reduce its level of membership during a year.

If you, or your USC, is interested in Membership, or have any queries, please be in touch.
