The WLYC 24 Hour Race is the UK?s No1 endurance dinghy race. The event is the premier opportunity for sailing club teams to compete for serious trophies, while also enjoying the unique hospitality provided by one of the best social events in the dinghy racing calendar. The race is sailed for 24 hours on the relatively safe waters of the Marine Lake; crew changes being permitted during the race.
Entries are accepted from sailing clubs and Universities throughout the UK; in addition, occasionally, teams from Eire, France, and even the USA have entered in the past. There are 3 categories of entrant:
a. Unrestricted.
b. Masters: sailed by a team consisting of helms aged 40 or over at the start of the race, with crews of any age.
c. University: sailed by a team consisting of members of a University Sailing Club.
In 2004 we are hoping to attract 70 ? 80 teams over the weekend 18 / 19 September. We suggest that there are a minimum of 5 helms and 5 crews in each team plus a non-sailing support team. Speed is not everything; to be competitive everyone in a club has a role to play, working together towards a common aim. The objective should be to develop a professionally run team, while at the same time having a great weekend.
