The BUSA Student Yachting Nationals are being hosted for the second year in succession by Sport Solent, the University’s Sport and Recreation Service, at the Royal Southern Yacht Club. Monday, 10th – Thursday, 13th April.
31 teams from universities across the UK take to the water this week at the BUSA Student Yachting Nationals at the Royal Southern Yacht Club.
Teams include current World Champions Southampton Solent University and last years Student Yachting Champions Southampton University. Another team to watch out for will be Strathclyde University, fresh from winning the Scottish Universities Yachting Championships earlier this month.
The competition will see over 200 students in 31 teams competing over four days of intense and exhilarating racing. The competition is made up of eight races on the Solent under the skilful management of the Royal Southern Yacht Club’s Chief Race Officer, Tony Lovell.
Each team is made up of eight crew members, two of which must be female, and a Sunsail Sunfast 37 is chartered to each team by the Port Solent-based sailing company, Sunsail.
Sailing Secretary of the Royal Southern Yacht Club, Tim Thubron, adds:
“The Royal Southern Yacht Club is delighted be hosting the BUSA Student Yachting Nationals for the second year running. For this year we are also pleased to have received support from Carlsberg and will be presenting the winning skipper with his / her weight in Carlsberg.”
Susan Hanley, Sport Solent’s Events and Planning Officer, comments:
“The University is now firmly established as the premier yachting institution in the university sector, winning the BUSA Student Yachting Nationals four times in the last six years. They have represented England four times at the Student Yachting World Cup and as well as being current world champions, they have produced outstanding performances to come second in 2000 and 2003 and third in 2001.”
